Partly since I graduated from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975), and have observed the liberal arts education on the ground (Brown University) It is my belief that educational programs should incorporate studies in art along with other areas of study. It is no surprise coming from an ethnomusicologist who has acquired an MA in 1967 and earned a Ph.D. earned from UCLA. The program I am in, ethnomusicology, that was started from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is ideally located in the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. I enjoy pursuing multiple interests and looking at the whole image. It is a great pleasure to be able to impart knowledge and expertise to graduate and undergraduate students. I am the and the author of three volumes: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. Then I will alternate between academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 until 1988, Dean of Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998 and the Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and am now back as Chair of the Department of Music).
